Looks like WestJet RBC World Elite Mastercard holders have access to a unique promo right now. From now until December 9, 2020, 10% of all your purchases will count towards your qualifying spend requirement when it comes to your WestJet Rewards tier status. To be clear, this applies to every purchase you make with your card. It is not exclusive to WestJet flights or WestJet Vacations.
This is truly a unique promotion as this has never been offered in Canada, but clearly it’s a reaction to the recent Aeroplan changes. Regardless, if you have the WestJet RBC World Elite Mastercard, you should be excited about this offer as it could potentially be an easy way for you to reach your next status tier. Note that you must register for this offer on the WestJet website to take part.
Upgrade your WestJet status while on the ground
Once your card is registered, you can take part in this promotion. Here’s a quick summary of how it works:
- 10% of all purchases made with your WestJet RBC World Elite Mastercard will count towards the primary cardholder’s tier eligibility
- The next tier to achieve will be based on your tier status as of September 10, 2020.
- Maximum one qualifying spend boost can be achieved during this promotion
Even though it’s only the primary cardholder who can take advantage of the promotion, any supplementary cardholder spending would be applied to the primary cardholder so you’re not losing out on anything.
This offer clearly states that you can only move up one tier level during the promo. That means you can go from Teal to Silver, or Silver to Gold, etc. However, you wouldn’t be able to go from Teal to Gold no matter how much you spend during the promotional period.
In addition to the summary above, there are three distinctive tracking periods:
- Period 1: September 10 – October 9, 2020
- Period 2: October 10 – November 9, 2020
- Period 3: November 10 – December 9, 2020
The qualifying spend is based on the total amount of purchases made on your card during the period you register, plus any periods after. If you registered for period 1, purchases during that time and periods 2+3 would count. For those who register in period 2, they would also get purchases made in period 3 applied. Obviously, it’s in your best interest to register right away.
Is this promo worth it?
Casual WestJet flyers may not care too much about this promo, but nonetheless it’s an easy way to earn some qualifying spend. I suspect frequent flyers will be very excited since the next status tier comes with some pretty awesome benefits such as an increased earn rate and more airline vouchers.
It’s also worth noting that WestJet doesn’t require any qualifying segments or miles flown as Aeroplan does, everything is based on dollars spent. Basically, it’s a lot easier to earn status with WestJet.
Interestingly enough, WestJet already announced that the current status qualifying period will be extended to December 31, 2021. They also have another promotion where you’ll earn double the qualifying spend on flights booked before September 30, 2020, with travel before December 15, 2020. Since you can stack the two promotions, it’s an excellent time to be a WestJet Rewards member.
Although the promotion ends on December 9, 2020, I would not be surprised if this benefit is made a permanent feature in the future. WestJet is well aware of what is coming from Aeroplan so they want to see how their members react to this promotion.
How much do I need to spend to get to the next status tier?
|Status tier||Qualifying spend|
WestJet Rewards members get teal status at default. For you to move up a tier, you need to reach certain spending thresholds. Normally, qualifying dollars only apply to 100% of your base fare for eligible WestJet flights and 20% of your base package price for eligible WestJet Vacations packages. This promo allows you to earn qualifying dollars on all your spending as long as you charge it to your WestJet RBC World Elite Mastercard.
If you look at the spending chart, you need to earn $3,000 in qualifying dollars to go from Teal to Silver or Gold to Platinum. However, Silver members only need to spend an additional $2,000 to get to Gold, which makes it a sweet spot for this promo.
Let’s say you’re a Silver tier member and you charge $10,000 to your WestJet RBC World Elite Mastercard during the promotion. That’s $1,000 in qualifying spending you would have earned. You would then only need to earn another $1,000 in qualifying spend by the end of 2021 to get Gold status.
WestJet RBC World Elite Mastercard benefits
For those who currently don’t have the WestJet RBC World Elite Mastercard, you’re probably wondering if it’s worth applying for to take advantage of the current promos. While this offer is great, you should focus more on the benefits that come with the card which include:
- $119 annual fee
- $350 WestJet Dollars sign up bonus after your first purchase
- Earn 2% back in WestJet dollars on WestJet flights or WestJet Vacations packages
- Earn 1.5% back in WestJet dollars on everyday purchases
- Receive an annual round-trip companion voucher starting at $119
- Save 3¢/L on fuel and always earn 20% more Petro-Points when you link your WestJet RBC World Elite MasterCard
- Free first checked bags for the primary cardholder (up to 8 bags on the same reservation)
- Some travel insurance included
- Purchase security and extended warranty insurance
- Mastercard Airport Experiences provided by LoungeKey
Make no mistake, the WestJet RBC World Elite Mastercard is one of the best travel credit cards in Canada. The sign up bonus, free checked bags and companion voucher alone should be enough to convince you to apply. While you may not be travelling soon, the current welcome bonus of $350 is at a historic high (it’s normally $250).
