From a senior's viewpoint:
Aeroplan may be easy to collect, but if you don't want to spend their miles on travel, they offer very little else. Gift cards maybe.

Airmiles are worthwhile spending 95=$10 for groceries or gas, both fairly frequent necessities. And it's relatively easy to collect with double dipping with an Airmiles credit card.
PC Optimum are slower to accumulate if you're not into beauty/cosmetic/gift items at Shoppers.

CMT,

Yes, there's no denying that a cash back card earning 4% and scanning your PC Optimum membership is a good combo. I personally prefer to accumulate PC Optimum points as quickly as possible as the bonus redemption events at Shoppers can be highly lucrative.

Either way, when talking strictly about grocery loyalty programs, PC Optimum is the best. Air Miles got a little better since you can now earn 3 X the rewards at partners, but you still got to spend a fair amount to earn points. Longo's Rewards program is pretty useless.

Thanks for quick thoughts. I understand ease of PC rewards redemption, yet think for groceries (in particular) that a 4% cash back card together with PC card for special points accumulation if the "optimum" combo

CMT,

Admittedly, I'm not as familiar with the stores in Quebec. To maximize PC Optimum, you definitely need to have one of the PC Mastercards so you earn points on every purchase. I personally only buy sale items at Shoppers or when there are huge point events. E.g. 20X the points. Redeeming points at Shoppers is worth it since there are so many bonus points events.

I believe PC Optimum is not a #1 choice. I find you essentially pay 20% more at Shoppers/Pharmaprix than at Jean Coutu (in Quebec) so you are essentially getting your overcharge back. A better choice is at Air Miles at Jean Coutu. In addition tou do not get PC points at grocery stores, unless you buy specific driven products. better choice is Metro points (in Quebec)

I disagree with your assessment of the best & worst hotel and air mile programs. Air Miles and Best Western are hardly the worst. You clearly need to spend more time with both programs As a Diamond member with Best Western, I have gotten a ton of value out of Best Western around the world. There are just as many if not more opportunities to gain points with Best Western as there are Marriott. Best Western has had stay 2 nights 1 night free promotions throughout last year which stacked with discounts, and gift card promotions, systemwide bonus points on stays promotions, points for filling out reviews/surveys after a stay... points for being a higher tier member and a free credit card to get a few extra points. Everything combined it's not hard to gain points and get value out of their program... and there are stays for as low as 5000, 8000 & 12000 points. The way I read your complaints it's as if you want every hotel chain to be the same but each is different for a reason... and it's important to learn the strengths and weaknesses of the programs before just straight out saying they are bad.
