Lonely Planet has just released its Best in Travel 2020 book and I couldn’t be more excited as this annual book serves as inspiration for me. I love finding out if I’ve been to any of the destinations they’ve featured and I’ve also planned trips based on their recommendations.

What’s interesting about the selected destinations is that it’s a pretty intense process to ensure the right places get chosen. A survey is sent to every Lonely Planet staff member, travel writers, bloggers, publishing partners and more so it’s a pretty diverse group of people. Besides the survey, Lonely Planet also organizes brainstorming events at their offices before settling on a shortlist before a panel decides on the final list. Now let’s find out who made Lonely Planet’s Best in Travel 2020

Top 10 countries

  1. Bhutan
  2. England
  3. Northern Macedonia
  4. Aruba
  5. eSwatini
  6. Costa Rica
  7. The Netherlands
  8. Liberia
  9. Morocco
  10. Uruguay

From this list, I’ve only visited England and The Netherlands which is likely the case for many other people. Interesting enough, Uruguay, Morocco and Costa Rica were shortlisted for some of my previous trips, but I never made it there. I was planning on doing a Caribbean destination this year so maybe I need to take a look at Aruba.

Top 10 cities

  1. Salzburg, Austria
  2. Washington, DC, USA
  3. Cairo, Egypt
  4. Galway, Ireland
  5. Bonn, Germany
  6. La Paz, Bolivia
  7. Kochi, India
  8. Vancouver, Canada
  9. Dubai, UAE,
  10. Denver, USA

Wow, I’ve actually been to the top 3 destinations on this list. I personally loved Salzburg since it was the perfect day trip from Munich and Washington, DC was more fun than I anticipated. I went to Vancouver three times in the last year, but they were all for work so I didn’t get much time to really enjoy the city. I’ll likely be headed there again soon so I should keep a day open just for me. Dubai has always been on my list too since I have a good friend that lives there, maybe it’s time I actually make my way down there.

Top 10 Best Value

  1. East Nusa Tenggara, Indonesia
  2. Budapest, Hungary
  3. Madhya Pradesh, India
  4. Buffalo, USA
  5. Azerbaijan
  6. Serbia
  7. Tunisia
  8. Cape Winelands, South Africa
  9. Athens, Greece
  10. Zanzibar, Tanzania

Since I focus on travel and finance, I had to include Lonely Planet’s top 10 best value destinations. I’ve only been to Budapest, but Buffalo has actually been a place I’ve wanted to visit for some time. It’s less than a 2-hour drive from where I live and I know they’ve revitalized quite a bit over the years. I would love to go to India and Indonesia but now that I have a young daughter, I may have to wait before I make my way there.
