Are you looking for a General Assembly Pizza subscription review? If you’re a pizza monster like me, then you’ve probably been hit by the ads on Facebook. At first glance, the idea sounds weird. Why would I want pizzas delivered to me monthly when I can just order them whenever I want? I brushed it off for months, but I finally decided to try it out of curiosity. I’m happy to report that this may have been the best decision I’ve made in recent history.

You need to forget everything you know about frozen pizza and gourmet takeout pizza. General Assembly pizza provides you with flash-cooked pizzas that have been frozen. You finish the cooking at home at your convenience. You’re basically getting restaurant-quality pizza in about 10 mins from the time you take it out of your freezer.

How does General Assembly pizza taste?

Let’s get to the most important part of this General Assembly pizza review. Does the pizza taste any good? The answer is yes. It’s a thin-crust pizza that has a doughy texture (but you can cook it longer if you like it crispy). If you live in Toronto, it’s comparable to Terroni and Pizza Libretto.

As for size, every pizza is 10 inches. Adults and teenagers should have no problem finishing an entire pizza on their own. My daughter who’s four and doesn’t typically eat much still ate almost half a pizza. For reference, many pizzas you get at a restaurant are 12 inches so they may be a touch smaller than what you’re used to.

The pizzas use all-natural dough and preservative-free meats where possible. You know how when you get a typical frozen pizza, every topping doesn’t taste exactly right? With General Assembly pizza, it tastes like someone made the pizza fresh in my freezer. It’s actually shocking how good it is.

How much does the General Assembly pizza cost?

How much General Assembly pizzas cost depends on how many you’re ordering. Right now, the current costs are as follows:

  • 4 Pizzas – $49 ($12.25 each)
  • 6 Pizzas – $65.94 ($10.99 each)
  • 8 Pizzas – $87.92 (10.99 each)
  • 10 Pizzas – $109.90 ($10.99 each)

There’s also a $4.99 delivery fee for subscribers or a $9.99 fee if you’re doing the one time box. General Assembly recently changed their pricing. While the 4 stack order gets a bit pricey at $12.25 each, the 4, 6, and 8 stacks are not bad at $10.99 each. I personally order 10 at a time and set my order for every 8 weeks. This cuts down on my delivery fees. Obviously, you can only pay via credit card.

If you’re looking to try General Assembly getting a 6 pizza stack is the best way to start since you can cancel at any time. There is the option to do one-time pizza box purchase, but it’s more expensive. You’re better off doing the subscription and then cancelling later.

Some people will complain about the service fee, but if you were to order pizza for delivery, you have to pay a delivery fee and tip. The General Assembly service fee is arguably cheaper since it’s a fixed price. You can use General Assembly pizza discount code: MWHTWENTY to get 20% off your first order.

For reference, I recently ordered two pizzas from a gourmet pizza restaurant and it came out to $40 for two pizzas and this was with me going to pick it up myself. The savings you get from General Assembly can be quite noticeable.

Admittedly, pizza chains are always going to be cheaper than General Assembly, but it’s not a fair comparison. General Assembly is for those times where you want a gourmet pizza that is comparable to pizzas served in a restaurant. If you want cheap pizza (and I do at times), just or Domino’s when they’re 50% off.

How often are the pizzas delivered?

Currently, the Generally Assembly pizza subscription is available to people who have a postal code starting with M, L and N. In addition, they’re available in Muskoka, Prince Edward County, and Ottawa. They currently have plans to be in British Columbia by the end of 2021.

When you place your first order, you choose your delivery date. Right now, there’s about a three-day delay from the time you order, so you need to wait about a week until your pizzas are delivered. General Assembly told me that they’re trying to get that down to 72 hours.

Your subscription would renew every 4 weeks from the date of your first delivery. That said, you can set your subscription to renew every six or eight weeks. You can even skip your next delivery or cancel/pause your subscription at any time. Additionally, you can also move up your delivery date if you want to get access to more pizzas.

On the day of your delivery, you’re sent a text message with a link to your estimated delivery time. This updates in real-time, so it’s quite handy. That said, there have been times where I didn’t get a link to the real-time map, but the original text message with the estimated delivery window was still accurate.

The pizzas are delivered in a temperature-controlled box. They come frozen and the box has dry ice to ensure they’re kept cold. You should put them in your freezer as soon as you get them (or put them right into your oven if you’re hungry). The pizzas are vacuum sealed, but they purposely leave a bit of air in them to let the toppings breathe. The last thing you want is for all your toppings to stick the plastic.

One thing many people don’t like is the amount of packaging that’s included. Each individual pizza also comes in plastic packaging. Similar to other food delivery services, there’s just a lot of waste. That said, the liner and dry ice bags are recyclable. Additionally, General Assembly does carbon offsets for delivery.

Cooking your pizzas

As long as you have an oven (or even a mini-oven), you’re going to get a great tasting pizza with General Assembly. They recommend baking your pizza for 5-7 mins at 475 degrees and then broiling it for about 60-90 seconds in the end. It’s literally gourmet pizza in under 10 minutes.

The most important thing here is to make sure you watch your pizzas as they bake. If you prefer your pizzas to be a little doughy, cook them for closer to five minutes. If you like it crispy, seven minutes or even more is a good idea. Also, note that every oven is different so yours may not have consistent heat so you need to play around with the times to see what’s right for you. Again, make sure you’re watching your pizzas as the cook since you don’t want to burn them.

Waiting for pizza

One thing worth noting is that you can also cook your pizzas in a convection oven. Although my mini-oven only heats as high as 450, I decided to try it one day as a test. I ended up cooking it for nine minutes, plus two minutes on broil. Although it took a touch longer, the pizza came out great.

Freezing your pizzas

A lot of people I spoke to who have been hesitant to subscribe are worried about freezer space. General Assembly Pizza says that the 8 stack is their most popular choice. This may seem like a lot of pizzas, but trust me, you’ll go through them fast. As mentioned, you can easily eat one pizza on your own. If you have a family of four, 8 pizzas will only last you two meals.

These pizzas are thin, so two stacked are similar in size to a single traditional frozen pizza (think Delissio). Ideally, you’ll be eating half your order the day it arrives, so you’re not actually freezing that many pizzas. Don’t forget, these pizzas are only 10 inches, so they don’t actually take up a ton of room in your freezer. Here’s a picture of two pizzas in my freezer which is typically packed.

As you’ve probably figured out, my General Assembly pizza subscription review is positive. I love pizza so I plan on keeping my 8 stack delivery every 4 months. Some people may think that’s a bit excessive, but you don’t know my pizza obsession. Also, the cost of 8 pizzas is less than what I pay for a single meal out with my family, so I’m actually saving money here.

If you’re ready to subscribe, use my General assembly pizza discount code “MWHTWENTY” and get 20% off your first delivery. For the record, I do not make a commission when you use this code. General Assembly provided me with this code for my readers, so I’m happy to share it since I enjoy the pizza. Hopefully, you do too!

Thanks for this review. I, too, have seen the many ads on Facebook and been tempted to order my pizza subscription, but never did. Your review and the great promo code finally convinced me to place my first order:). I found out about your post through Boomer and Echo. Thank you!

Enjoy! I upped my order to 8

These pizzas are too SMALL!!! Don’t get me wrong, they are very good and there is a nice variety of flavours to choose from but I would say it’s not worth the price. I get it.. they are gourmet pizzas from a fancy Toronto shop, so it’s cheaper than ordering from a sit down restaurant. Personally, I’m happy ordering a LG 3 topping pizza from Domino’s or Pizza Pizza when they have their 50% off promos to get more bang for my buck. As for me and my household, we’re not intense “foodies” or anything so paying a premium for gourmet pizza on a regular basis seems unnecessary. Overall, we’re still glad we tried GA pizza and appreciated the $22 off but wouldn’t continue with a subscription at full price.

      Emm,

I totally get your thinking. I LOVE Dominos and when they have 50% off, it feels like Christmas. That said, I don’t think it’s fair to compare GA to fast food. I think of GA as a treat and compare it to restaurant thin style pizza such as Terroni or Pizza Libretto. If I were to order from one of those places, I’d be paying $17-20 for a 12 inch pizza. GA costs me less than $10 for a 10 inch of similar quality.

I originally had my order set for once a month, but I’ve switched it to every 2 months since I still enjoy ordering from Dominos. I certainly understand why some would choose to get Dominos 100% of the time.

    Barry,

You are totally right. GA should not be compared to fast food. For sure it’s gourmet pizza and should fall within a higher price range. My situation is that I live about an hour away from Toronto and haven’t had the opportunity to order from comparable restaurants. There’s nothing like it in my city and I’m thinking they’d be a bit too pricey for me. After looking into the restaurants you compared GA to, I can see that GA is definitely a bargain, especially with free shipping! I think if the pizzas were bigger I’d be more inclined to keep a subscription going as an occasional treat but I’m happy with our one time purchase and really do enjoy the pizza!

      Emm,

I totally get it. My wife likes gourmet pizza and when we used to order from a restaurant, paying $45 after tax and tip seemed for 2 pizzas seemed crazy for me. GA has been a good compromise. She also still allows me to order Dominos so it’s a good compromise for everyone. An occasional treat is a good way of looking at it. Like I said, I switched my order to every two months, but I like how I can also move it back up if I need a fix.
