When one thinks about Amsterdam travel the misconception tends to be that the only things worth seeing are the coffee shops and the red light district, but nothing could be further from the truth; this was my 5th visit to Amsterdam and the diversity still impresses me.
A 5th visit may sound like a bit much but since I have family in the city I try to drop in as often as I can.
My uncle emigrated to Amsterdam many years ago to open a Chinese restaurant and to raise his family, many of my cousins still live in the city and they represent what Amsterdam/Holland is today; a diverse culture. When walking around the city you’ll hear many different languages, it’s just as likely to be coming from locals, not just from tourists.
The other thing that keeps me coming back to Amsterdam is the lifestyle. Everyone here is just chilled out, time literally slows down when in Amsterdam.[fusion_builder_container hundred_percent=”yes” overflow=”visible”][fusion_builder_row][fusion_builder_column type=”1_1″ background_position=”left top” background_color=”” border_size=”” border_color=”” border_style=”solid” spacing=”yes” background_image=”” background_repeat=”no-repeat” padding=”” margin_top=”0px” margin_bottom=”0px” class=”” id=”” animation_type=”” animation_speed=”0.3″ animation_direction=”left” hide_on_mobile=”no” center_content=”no” min_height=”none”][icon name=”share” class=”” unprefixed_class=””] Related: How much does it cost to go to Amsterdam?
Amsterdam has a lot to offer including; Anne Frank House, the Van Gogh Museum, the Rijksmuseum and yes the red light district is the most famous attraction but you should know that this area is quite safe since it really is a tourist attraction. I’ve never felt in any danger while wandering the streets of the red light district but common sense should always be used.
The main thing about Amsterdam that catches many tourists off guard is the food. The food is very expensive and portions are quite small compared to North America. A large sized drink here would be considered a small or medium in Canada. This was quite the opposite from Istanbul and Budapest where prices were much lower.
I will say this, Holland has the best fries in the world.
