The Amex refer a friend program is arguably one of the best features that many American Express cards offer and most people don’t even know about it. It will always benefit the referer which is why so many Amex cards are on the list of the best travel credit cards. However, with some cards, the American Express refer a friend program also gives the referee a bonus which is why it’s worth paying attention to.
If you’re thinking about applying for a new American Express credit card, it’s always worth checking to see if you get an additional bonus by using an American Express refer a friend link.
For those of you who already have American Express cards, clearly, the Amex refer a friend program is meant to be a way for you to promote their cards. I should note that although I’m a Canadian writer, most American Express cards worldwide have a referral feature.
How to generate an Amex refer a friend link
To find out if you have access to the American Express refer a friend program, log in to your American Express account and click one of your cards. Things will differ by region, but you’ll usually see your current balance, how much you owe, and how many points (or cash back) you currently have above the fold. If you scroll down, you should see an option to refer friends.
Click “refer now,” agree to the terms, then click get your referral link.
You’ll then be able to copy your referral link and send it to friends. Alternatively, you can immediately email your link to people. Note that there is a cap on the number of approved referrals you can make which differ per card.
What you get as the referer is clearly displayed, but it’s not always clear what the referee gets. After clicking “refer now” the first time, details will be displayed. However, you’d have to compare the Amex refer a friend deal to the regular sign up bonus to see what they’d actually get.
A better offer is always ideal, but there may be additional conditions to get that increased welcome bonus. Check out my list of the best American Express credit cards if you want to learn more about your card options.
Best Amex refer a friend credit cards
As mentioned, the Amex refer a friend program doesn’t always benefit the referee. But if you hold any of the following cards, you would get the following bonus when friends use your American Express referral link.
- American Express Cobalt – 5,000 Membership Rewards select points
- American Express AIR MILES – 200 AIR MILES
- American Express AIR MILES Platinum – 500 AIR MILES
- American Express AIR MILES Reserve– 800 AIR MILES
- SimplyCash Preferred Card – $150
- SimplyCash Card – $100
I should note that the American Express Cobalt card has given a bonus to the referee in the past, so it’s possible that a referal bonus will come up later.
For now, the following cards offer a great bonus for people signing up with an Amex refer a friend link. The referer gets their bonus in about 48 hours whereas the referee gets their bonus once they meet the minimum requirements.
American Express Platinum card
When using an American Express refer a friend link, new applicants get 60,000 points when spend $5,000 in the first three months of card membership. The normal offer is 50,000 points on a $3,000 spend so the added bonus is totally worth it. The person making the referer gets 15,000 points which is massive. American Express Membership Rewards points are incredibly valuable and can be transferred to Aeroplan at a 1:1 ratio or to Marriott Bonvoy at a 1:1.2 ratio. You can check out my American Express Platinum card review here for more details.
American Express Platinum Business card
If you’re looking for an insane sign up bonus, then you need to apply for the American Express Platinum Business card since it gives you 75,000 points when you spend $7,000 in the first three months. The regular offer is 40,000 points when spending $5,000 so you’re getting 88% more points. Reaching the minimum spend is the difficult part since it’s $7,000, but this is a business card so the assumption is you have a lot of expenses. Oh, the person making the referral gets 25,000 points which is no laughing matter.
American Express Marriott Bonvoy card
I love Marriott Bonvoy so naturally, I’m a fan of the American Express Marriott Bonvoy card, but I don’t love the Amex refer a friend program with this card. The referrer gets 10,000 points and the referee gets 61,000 points when they spend $3,000 points in the first three months. That’s only 1,000 extra points compared to the regular offer of 60,000 points, but the minimum spend is double of the regular spend requirement of $1,500. If you planned on spending that anyways, it’s not a big deal, but it’s a pretty minimal increase in points.
American Express Gold Rewards card
The American Express Gold Rewards card has an easy but weird referral bonus. Both the referer and referee get a bonus of 5,000 points but the referee needs to sign up for a supplementary card. The extra card is free so it makes no difference, but you would think that they would have just gone with an increased minimum spend requirement like all the other card.
