Aeroplan Points Transferable to Marriott Bonvoy and Status Match for Elite Members

Aeroplan has announced that Elite Status Members can now convert their Aeroplan points to Marriott Bonvoy at a one-to-one ratio. This is another great way for Aeroplan members to use their points for hotel stays and shows again why Aeroplan is one of the best airline travel loyalty programs in the world.

How to convert Aeroplan points to Marriott Bonvoy

Aeroplan members with 25K, 35K, 50K, 75K, or Super Elite status can immediately transfer their points to Marriott Bonvoy via the transfer page. Once signed in, you would simply provide your Marriott Bonvoy number.

While the process is simple, there are a few conditions. There’s a minimum transfer of 500 points, and you can only convert between 500 and 100,000 Aeroplan points to Marriott Bonvoy each day. Additionally, you can’t exceed 250,000 points per week. While the fine print does say it takes up to eight weeks to complete the transfer, it appears to happen instantly.

Is it worth converting Aeroplan points to Marriott Bonvoy?

I personally value one Aeroplan point at 1.5 to 2 cents. As for Marriott Bonvoy, I value one point at .9 cents. That means a straight conversion to Marriott Bonvoy is not worth it. However, it’s not that simple.

Marriott Bonvoy is an excellent rewards program in its own right. When you book five nights on points, you only pay for four nights. So if you’re a couple hundred or thousand points away from a good redemption, it could be worth transferring some points over to get that redemption.

Additionally, my estimation of value is just an average. There have been times when I’ve stayed at Marriott properties with a value of 2 cents per point. Alternatively, if you’re sitting on a ton of Aeroplan points and you’re interested in a specific Marriott property, you may want to transfer some points over for redemption. It comes down to your individual situation and whether you think the value is worth it.

Marriott Bonvoy also allows you to convert your points to Aeroplan at a three-to-one ratio. However, for every 60,000 Marriott points you convert, you get an additional 5,000 Aeroplan points. That means 60,000 Marriott Bonvoy points get you 25,000 Aeroplan points. Plus, until October 31, 2024, when you transfer your Marriott Bonvoy points to Aeroplan, you get a 15% bonus.

It’s easy to argue that it’s better to keep your points in Marriott Bonvoy, but again, it comes down to your needs. If you need just a few more points for a good Aeroplan redemption, converting some Marriott Bonvoy points over might be the best thing to do.

Aeroplan and Marriott Bonvoy status match

As part of this enhanced partnership, Aeroplan 50K, 75K, and Super Elite Members will receive complimentary Marriott Bonvoy Gold Elite Status, while Marriott Bonvoy Titanium Elite and Ambassador Elite members will receive complimentary Aeroplan 25K Status.

This is an incredible benefit for frequent travellers as Marriott Bonvoy Gold Elite members get perks such as priority late check out (subject to availability), enhanced room upgrades (subject to availability), free breakfast at select properties and 25% bonus Marriott Bonvoy points on eligible stays.

For Marriott Titanium members getting Aeroplan 25K Status, they instantly get access to perks, including priority check-in and boarding, two free checked bags, eUpgrade credits, complimentary preferred seats, exclusive offers and more.

Final thoughts

Aeroplan, in my opinion, is one of the best airline loyalty programs in the world. When you combine that with Marriott Bonvoy, which has the largest hotel network in the world, you’re getting access to an incredible partnership. This continues the trend of Aeroplan offering more value to its members. It’ll be interesting to see what’s next for them.
