I believe it’s because more people have more time to book or look at flights when they are off work. I had been checking flights to Toronto for a while now. Flair air has a good deal but they only had flights arriving at night which I didn’t like. But at around late night Sunday, they came out with a new flight that arrives in the afternoon, so I went ahead and booked it.

You’re right that the prices aren’t much different depending on the site you use (they do vary slightly). However, using them to set up alerts and user friendly features to help you spot a good time to book if your travel dates and times are flexible can make a big difference in price.

Yes it is definitely happened to me as well a few years ago. I was browsing a fare and a few hours later or the next day it went up by a lot when I was ready to book. I was pretty peeved. I had my wits about me so I cleared all my cookies and cache and tried again. Voila, the old price was instantly restored.

It definitely still happens, but it’s increasingly rare. Some people think it could be a savings of hundreds of dollars, but as you stated it might be a much smaller amount.

Companies do display different prices depending on your browser history or even your OS. Expedia has been busted on that (and Walmart made the news some years ago too), so I would take this advice with a grain of salt. I don’t see why air companies or travel sites would not use price discrimination (or adaptative pricing):

I look forward to reading your travel posts. I even signed up to know roaming after reading your review. (It’s fantastic btw) Anyways, as an airline pilot and someone that has been involved in aviation for a while….you’re spot on. Anyone that says they got or know how to get the best deal is lying or misinformed. Even employees of airlines nowadays usually end up avoiding employee standby hassles and pay regular fares. Today airline margins are so slim. There’s a reason why Warren Buffet said he’ll never invest in airlines again! Great post. Have a good one.
